Can I get blonde highlights after coloring my hair medium brown?

I dyed my hair a medium brown a month ago and it just looks too plain. I want to add a bunch of blonde highlights, but I know that "color doesn't lift color," so can I still do this? Is this blonde going to look more orangish? I don't want that to happen. Any suggestions, advice?

highlights are great, just bleach to the tone that you want. you may need to use a toner to tone down anything brassy!

Reply:I JUST DID THAT ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO... BUT U NEED TO BLEACH THE STRANDS YOU WANT BLONDE AND THEN APPLY A TONER TO GET THE COLOR OF BLONDE YOU WANT.
Reply:YES YOU CAN...........iv done this so many time on my own hair! just be careful that you leave it on for long enough, i mean you don't want to walk round with ginger highlights now do u :)

Reply:my friend had that done to her hair and it looks really nice... as long as you get it done by a pro it will be fine. her blonde highlights don't look orange. maybe it depends which dye you use? should be ok though ^_^

tell your stylist to bring your highlights to an 8 or a 9, than apply a toner over your entire head for 5-10 minutes, and wash immedietly. The highlights will be a nice golden blond, with out getting a brassy orange color.

Reply:OK it perfectly fine if you put highlights you waited a good enough amount of time if you want Blond Highlight you can Bleach them But i Don't recommend it it Over process your hair leave it ti the Pro Believe me i had BAD experiences with color

Reply:Yes, just don't do it yourself because it is a 2 step process and it really needs to be done professionally or you will have orange hair. I worked in a hair salon for 6 years, and you can try to do it at home, but having to take the color off and put a toner on the same strands is hard to do when you can't completely see your entire head.
Reply:I always do my hair myself and I have never had a problem I think thats only if you try to dye your hair when its really dark,there should be no reason why that should happen.
