since Light is a wave I was curious to know what exactly is the medium of lights waving, like sound waves have the air as a medium. I am pretty sure Luminiferous aether was rules out recently.
What is the medium for lights wave in space?
In a sense, you could say that spacetime is the medium for propagation of electromagnetic waves. Someday, someone will discover profound implications of that observation.
Reply:The luminiferous aether was ruled out as recently as 1887.
Reply:Well, at the turn of the last century [recent in geological terms] there was a test of the "Luminiferous Aether" theory, which held that there was an invisible medium through which light traveled.
It was the Michaelson-Morley experiment, done in Cleveland, Ohio, at Case University, on Euclid Avenue.
This is ironic, because the experiment did NOT confirm the ether theory, leading to acceptance of Einstein's relativity, in which space is non-euclidean....
Light needs no medium; the properties of empty space are such that light can travel in it.
However, it should be noted that while the ether theory predicted a result of [say] X, and relativity a result of exactly zero, the result found was about 1/10 X. This result is reproducible.
What this means is that relativity is not a perfect theory, but merely one step closer to the ultimate truth.
