Why do people order steaks cooked any hotter than medium rare?

Don't they realize that making steak any more than medium rare is a way to ruin a good piece of meat? Do people mainly do it at lower end restaurants and, therefore, know that they are getting lower quality cuts and hope that cooking all the juices out of the meat will keep them safe or have they just never learned the proper way to enjoy red meat by letting it's flavor come through by not overcooking it?

Why do people order steaks cooked any hotter than medium rare?
it's a fear thing , they can't stand the sight of the blood dripping off the end of they're fork. honestly though i believe if you blind folded them + served a nice med piece of quality cut meat , they would enjoy it until you removed the blind fold , then it would be right back to the same old " that is gross "
Reply:It's not blood, though is it? So the argument about being squeamish about something that isn't there doesn't really hold up. Report It

Reply:Some people like the idea of eating a steak but can't bring themselves to eat it properly cooked (med/rare for me!) and since they can't stand the thought of eating something that looks like it is still bleeding, they cook the crap out of it. Also, if someone is ordering a steak, they can say "hey, look at me and what I can afford!"...steak isn't cheap after all, especially the better cuts.
Reply:Some people don't like to see the blood, and others don't like the smooth consistency of rarer meat, and others can't eat it unless it is really hot and yet others like their meat chewy and so they like it cooked more. I also knew someone that got food poisoning from meat once, and after that they could only eat it well-done.

It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with lower end restaurants. It is usually peoples past experiences with food that effect what they like. I have known many rich people who grew up going to super fine dining, that ate their meat well done. We just all have different tastes and wants.

I used to eat my meat rare and moo-ing (like just walk it past the fire), but over time I moved to med-rare, and sometimes I even want it med. Mostly that is because I want it really hot. My norm now is to order it butterfly cut, and rare to med-rare depending upon the place.

The best thing to remember is that diversity in life is part of what keeps it interesting... so why does it bother you so much if someone wants their meat different from you? It is ruined in your eyes, but to them it is perfect. Do you want to change them, or let them revel in who they are and what makes *them* happy:)
Reply:right now I have to, ok so actually I won't order one now. I am pregnant and they say not to eat any pink meat so I will wait till the baby is born then I will have a nice juicy Filet mignon. Yummy!!! can't wait for 4 more months to go by

Me, I tend to be vegetarian.

Betcha you would shun a steak had you seen the animal just prior to it being slaughtered.

Or, then again, some people don't care.
Reply:Maybe they dont want to seee any blood oozing out of it !!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Honestly, I get scared of red meat because I think it's undercooked and it could be harboring bacteria. I've never used thermometers to cook either, so to be on the safe side, I usually overcook stuff.

Are you saying if something is medium rare, it's still hot enough to have killed bacteria? Or, are you throwing caution to the wind in favor of a tastier steak?

Medium rare = 130 - 140 degrees F

USDA recommendation = 145
Reply:I don't like any food cooked to the point where it's dried out, but it should be a crime to ruin a good steak by overcooking it. I agree with you completely.
Reply:Because that's how some people like their steaks.:)
Reply:why don't you join the government, they are trying to tell us how and what to eat too.you eat your steak your way and we will eat ours how we like it.Buzz off!!
Reply:I would say that it must be a matter of taste. I like them rare but if I question the quality of the meat then I will get it well.
Reply:I prefer Med Rare as it is most tender. and flavorful, at that point.

Leo Lion, the only difference between killing of meat and killing of plant life is that you cannot hear the plants scream out and their life is cut short. Plant life is also a living organism.

We all must kill to eat whether it is an animal or plants. As a Buddhist, before I consume any food, I thank whatever gave up its life to sustain mine.

I respect your decision to eat without the consumption of meat, please, extend the same courtesy to those that have chosen to do otherwise.
Reply:This always got to me too. I have no idea.

My parents used to own a restaurant and if anybody ordered there steak more than medium rare my mum would ask them to leave.
